Hazleton native and three-time Manager of the Year Joe Maddon’s Respect 90 Foundation will host The Main Event, a youth boxing exhibition, on Friday, December 21 at the Hazleton Area Recreation Program at 601 South Poplar Street. All proceeds will benefit HARP’s youth boxing program. Doors open at 6 p.m.

The event will consist of a series of amateur youth boxing matches including two of Hazleton’s finest up and coming young fighters; Adrian Diaz and Luis Payno. Additionally, the evening will feature guest appearances by Maddon, former Heavyweight Champion Larry Holmes and Iran Barkley, a former champion at three different weight classes between 1988 and 1993.

Individual tickets are priced at $50 and include “Hazleton’s Best” light refreshments prior to the matches. The first bout will begin at 7 p.m. For tickets or sponsorships call (570) 233-5309.
Maddon has hosted the “Main Event” in Chicago for the past four years with proceeds benefiting Chicago’s inner-city boxing clubs.
Maddon has long been a fan of the sport. “My perception is there’s a lot of self-discipline involved in boxing, “he said. “If you’re teaching self-awareness and self-discipline, that’s always a good thing. I feel like if you take a young athlete and you show him how to be accountable to a difficult workout and a method— boxing involves so much technique and so many micro-lessons—that it will help them significantly in their lives.”
